The clip at the end of the cable in my son's room has broken. Buying a
new cable is not an option. It runs from one side of the house to the
other. How do I put a new clip on it?

You could buy a crimping tool and connectors, cut the cable and apply a
new one. You could also use a bandaid with a small hole cut in the
center and stick it to whatever it plugs into.-J

Take a small rectangular cut piece of electrical tape, the
same dimensions as the top of the RJ45 connector where the
clip broke off. Put the tape on the connector and it will
result in a friction fit into the socket.

Another option is as another poster mentioned, buying the
plugs and a crimper to install it.

Another option is to buy a wall faceplate and a jack,
terminating this lead at a wall outlet then having a
removable cable going from that to the computer. This is
probably the best long-term option, especially if there is a
chance of rough play damaging another cable. then it is more
easily and cheaply replaced.

A solution is to buy a CAT 5e inline coupler and firmly tape the
broken cable to it. You can put it on the floor in a protected area
then run a patch cable from the coupler to the computer. If that
cable gets damaged, then it's cheap and easy to replace it.

Right, and if it's the retaining clip that is broken; you
could epoxy the cable connection side to keep it on and
do without the tape.

All by itself? Or is your son three years old?

I think you'll find that it is. They sell them all over the place.

In my experience ethernet cables tend to go all the way from one end to the
other.

You don't.

You can even get short "extension" cables at some stores.

All this talk of tape and epoxy, anyone would think that the home handyman's
most useful substance, hot glue, had never been invented.

Tape is too unreliable and epoxy is over-kill.

Hot glue rulez! It's removable should the need arise yet tenacious in it's
adherance. You could simply hot glue the wantonly damaged RJ45 connector
directly into the socket in the computer. As I think I mentioned, hot glue
is removable if need be. However, if the OP can afford the couple bucks
required, a joiner or extension cable (and hot glue) would indeed be the
better option.

Very carefully using an expenisve special tool.

Don't forget to swing a chicken while dancing around a
sombrero always facing Mecca, and install WinXP 2 or 3 times
clean just for good measure or you will get NASTY registry
errors.

LOL

Is this the opportunity you've been waiting for to go wireless?

Otherwise I think all the options have been covered by others.
