I had the occasion to have to add 12 feet of cat 5 cable
from my router to another computer.I bought an 8 wire
extension plug and put both cables together. But the
system did not work .I am told there is a twist in the
connectors and putting two together like that won't
work.Is the best way to do this now is to cut off the
ends of the cables and splice them together without using
the adapter plug.
Help if you can I am tripping over the wire on the floor.
Thank you ,
Ray Ingram

Just about any PC shop will make a network cable at a
cost of about $25 per 100ft. I do not like to use premade
cables because they are usually 3 inches too short or 6 feet
to long.

You can even go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy CAT 5 bulk
cable and the tools and connectors and make your own, just
like the electricians do.

Because CAT 5 cable is now so inexpensive, your best choice in my opinion is
to just buy a longer cable assembly - thus avoiding splicing, special
connectors, etc..

You could cut and splice but it may not help. This cable will then become
less reliable and can give you more headaches. You can/should buy a longer
cable. Some stores already sell pre-made cables, of different standard
lengths. This are usually guarantied to work correctly.

If you are using a female/female LAN coupler, there are a few
possibilities for failure:

1. Bad cables (test each)
2. Bad coupler (replace)
3. Trying to use one regular cable, and one crossover cable (won't
work).

.
\Ray, if you are connecting another computer to a router
you must be using straight through wires (not crossover)
my thoughts are that the one of your cables is in fact
crossover cable.
You can confirm this by looking at both end of the cable
and see if the wiring is in the same order, if it is
different that is the problem, buy another cable and make
sure it is straight through.
If you are connecting to computers together without a
router the reverse is true, the cables must be crossover.
