install it spearately before installing CCC, while the larger version
includes .net in the download and [if necessary] installs it concurrently.
If you mean .net, you can get it without that on the official ATI
site.
Same size as in the links on that page you posted.
Dodgy.

You don't have to install CCC with any ATI releases. Choose Custom
installation and uncheck the CCC box. The older control version will be
installed instead.

I just use the omega drivers version without the .net bloat.
There's some lag time between releases though.

Of course, there's no reason to use the outdated Control Panel when ATi
Tray

seems to be working right again but now every time I boot I get a message
that I am not authorized to change CCC and I cannot change my refresh rate
like before. I am tired of uninstall, clean registry, install!

Yes, it will work with the AIW 9600 series.
When I first installed CCC (required for Crossfire), a user "ASPNet" was
added to my system. Is "ASPNet" showing in your list of users?

Looks like the drivers were not released in time to include official
support for X1950 cards, although the INF can be easily modified to make
it work.
