I've always just downloaded these and installed them. Should I be
uninstalling the old ones first? If so, how? I know there's an uninstall
utility in the ATI folder...

ATI-drivers over previous ones. If done sone, after playing
a while, no matter what game, screen just freezes and turns
black. After few seconds it returns to the game and I can
play normally. Until it does it again and again and again...
First I thought it was an overheating issue, but completely
removing previous drivers with Driver Cleaner seemed to
discard this problem. Perhaps drivers crashed and VPU
recover was able to get them back online or something,
who knows...

E.g. every time I boot Windows, right before the blue login
screen my monitor goes black and I get a 'no signal' display
for a few seconds. Never had this happen with any other
card/driver.. Matrox, Nvidia etc.
I've had the issue with the no signal since the mid 4.x's. It doesn'tThe Berzerker said:Glad I'm not the only one! I never knew this was related to anything.....
just figured it was my system 'in general'.

de Moni said:Well, apparently I was wrong. Thorough cleaning of
previous drivers didn't solve the black screen mystery
afterall that seems to occur in games if there are some
sudden high detail effects like explosions etc. happening.
This problem is only with the 5.x drivers, 4.12 is the
latest set I can use without such annoying black screen
glitches. Haven't tried out 5.4's yet, but I doubt they'll
fix this...
The Berzerker said:This loss of signal to the monitor has been apparent ever since I can
remember.... I bought my 9800 Pro during the mid 4.* catalyst drivers....
and have since moved to Omega's Drivers, which still feature this same
'problem'. It affects nothing but the seconds before my welcome screen
log-on thing, and I care not about it. I have no blacking out during games
or anything like that whatsoever. Although my monitor has been slowly dying
for the last 2 years, and every now and then blacks out before returning a
second or two later, with no indication of a loss of signal...... but that's
just my monitor, guaranteed.

The Berzerker said:And I _know_ this driver problem is making monitors die faster. It's
not good (esp. for a CRT) to have a power signal suddenly cut off and
on again every time a computer boots.
Michael said:I can't believe this as I am still using a NEC 4D after more than 10
years. If the constant changing of resolutions was responsible for
monitor death it would have died a horrible death many years ago.
