Well,

I bought a Sapphire 10552 Radeon 9500 based on a picture that turned out to
be incorrect (L-Shape: Picture - Yes, Real thing - no).

No biggie, so just testing it out I try these drivers:

wxp-w2k-cod-7-96-012324e.exe

Many system icons get wacked, etc.

Revert to drivers from CD (6.14.6307) that came with card and icons all
better.

OK, fine, but one weird thing remains:

Open Explorer and clicking a HD no longer "Opens" it...

The resulting window is a "Search" window...

I.E. default action of "clicking a drive" is no longer to open it but is
now to open a "search window" on it. Right click shell menu confirms:
"Search" is on top, "Open" is down a ways (but still works, knock on wood).

This (so far, knock on wood again) only affects "drives", all other folders
/ directories seem normal...

Anybody got a quick link to "how to tell XP mouse click / folder actions /
whatever to reset to default" or some such?

Weird...

Windows Explorer and click (left pane) HD (c:) and instead of (Right pane) drive info/contents you get a search window?

In 'My Computer' does the right click menu work properly?

Also I don't think it is a ATI / driver problem more like your mouseware (driver) is bungled. Remove your mouse from device manager
and reboot.

Wasn't mouse driver.
I didn't describe the problem well.
Anyway, the fix was to open "My Computer", go Tools, Folder Options, File
Types, select Drive, hit "Advanced" button, add new action "open", browse to
C: WINDOWS, select "explorer.exe" & OK, OK, OK.
Thanks for trying to help.

I'm changing my sig back to "duh" 'cause that's the way I'm going to feel
for a while, obviously.
1st time building PC from scratch, things have come a long ways since the
old "top tier vendor" Win98 box of '99, which never was right either, not in
98, not in 2k, not in XP, not after replacing most components...
The "fix" described below gets me to where drives open properly BUT only in
new window, even though I have options set to "open each folder in the same
window".
Yet to figure out how to "fix" this.
And other stuff, I'll be around...
Any help?
re-top posting here & elsewhere,
TIA, duh
