I've also obtained good results by recording cassette tracks to hard
disk using Audacity, saving them as WAVE files, and burning them to CD
with Exact Audio Copy.

EAC is the bees knees, baby.

It is quite a versatile program. I forgot to mention earlier that it can
record WAVEs as well as burn them to disc, thereby eliminating the need
to use Audacity. I haven't tried this yet, though, so I can't vouch for
how well it works. EAC does seem to do many things very nicely, though.

Not sure about their definitions of bees knees. It means very good/the best
etc, but I always understood it to be a corruption of "the business" meaning
the same thing essentially.

Jeepers Creepers, I've been using EAC for more than 3 years now. I
totally forgot that it had that capability. I was trying to find
something as good as EAC, guess I found it.
