what would be the best way to set up a caseless computer. I'll be using
it as a test bed

TIA

I've got a pull-out mobo tray from an early (really heavy) ATX case I use,
it has the brackets for expansion cards and all. I screwed a PSU to the
back/side and there's room on the tray (it takes a full-sized board) where I
drilled a couple of holes and mounted a HDD. I also have a wee plastic panel
from another case with the required wires, switches and LEDs hooked up, it
even has a peizo (sp?) 'speaker' on the panel. A perfect set-up for a
test-bed. I don't have a CDROM permanently set up on it but it's just a
matter of seconds to hook one up.

Failing something like that maybe you could cut down an old, well-built
case? I used to run mine on a wooden board but the expansion cards weren't
fixed firmly enough. I was well pleased to get that old case with the
pull-out. I don't have the case anymore (it was ugly), just kept the tray.

My testbed system is an elderly SuperMicro Pentium Pro MB screwed to a piece
of 1/2" plywood with some nylon spacers underneath to lift it a bit. The
rear edge of the MB is at the edge of the plywood so that the tongues of the
expansion cards clear. The PS simply sits in a frame made of 1/2" trim
tacked to the board to keep it from sliding around. The drives normally sit
on top of the PS unattached although if I would have had a larger scrap of
plywood I would have made little frames for them similar to what the PS
uses. It really doesn't take much to put together an operating computer. A
piece of heavy corrugated board with some glued-on strips would suffice to
make a workable system.

Some thin board , expoxy some nuts onto the surface so you can screw
in the mounts spaced apart so you can screw in the board. You have to
be careful about the cards if they dont have support as they usually
do screwing into the case at the edge since they can move around in
their sockets especially with big cords plugging into them like the
video card.
