Case fan on a CPU

60mm CPU fans don't last very long and they're noisy. When they go bad
you've left with a useless heatsink if not a fried CPU. 80mm case and PSU
fans seem to last forever. I always cannibalize them when I get a chance.
Lately, I realized that if you turn one of these fans 45 degrees it will fit
on a 60mm heatsink. I use super glue to stick them in place. I've tried this
on two systems and so far it works great. Nice and quiet and good cooling.
They stay in place but you can pop them off with a screwdriver.

Or you could get a 60-80mm adapter and do it properly.

I agree in the past I purchased 60-80mm adaptors from Ebuyer - 69p I think -
and the reduction in noise using a cheap case fan instead of the stock AMD
fans is amazing. However I want to buy more adaptors but cannot find them
anymore on Ebuyer....

Those adapters, assuming you can find one, cost as much as a new HSF. My tip
makes use of an old heatsink and cannibalized fan and costs nothing. It may
well work better since it cools the mobo and the outside surfaces of the
heatsink. And it doesn't require a huge increase in headroom. I rest my
case, jerk.
