Cascading Templates?

I have read all of the MVP articles pertinent to styles
and formatting.

I believe that I understood the MVP articles to convey
the importance of not modifying the normal template
beyond what I would want to appear in all documents
including labels and envelopes.

That being said, my very first template is to be my
business letterhead as all of the documents that my
business produces include everything that's in it.

Can my customized templates Cascade down from and be
linked to the letterhead template so that if I, for
example, modify the footer on my business letterhead it
will update in all successive templates?

Or is that ability only limited to global templates such
as normal.dot?

One way to accomplish what you want is to create the common letterhead
components as AutoText entries and insert them in the various templates as
AutoText *fields*. That way whenever you modify the AutoText entries, you
can just update the fields in the templates. If you want these to be static
in the letters you produce, however, you'll need to unlink the fields when
you create the documents. On the whole, unless you're changing the
letterhead very often, I find it easier just to copy/paste new text into
several templates as needed.
