Have for once tried getting a non-OEM cartridge: the black ink cartridge for
the Canon Pixma IP 3000. It doesn't click into place like it should and is
loose, so doesn't work. It says on it that it's the BJC 3000; I had asked
for a replacement for the BCI 3EBK. Have I been sent the wrong one or is it
just that there is something wrong with the design?
Cheers.

There are 2 tabs on the back of the tank at the top. These need to fit into
2 slots in the back of the head assembly. With some 3rd party tanks, they
don't line up exactly right and you need to lift or move the tank to get it
to lock in.

Whatever you do, don't leave it sitting without a tank in there for more
than a few minutes.

You would not need to write this had you chose to use the ink that Canon
recommends for the printer.

I can't get it to click in at all. Am I likely to have the same problem
with the colours?
Cheers.

And can I get *the right kind of ink* that can be syringed into old ink
tanks (and is this advisable)?
Cheers.

Sounds like you have been sold the wrong tank. A visual inspection of the
carriage and the tank should make it obvious whether the tank has the
correct tabs on it. I would consider NOT buying supplies from the same
company again.

Yes. numerous reputable refill ink vendors sell the proper formula.
It is safe to do with the right materials, tools, and techniques.

I haven't found one for the IP 3000; I'm thinking perhaps it's because it's
a pigment ink. I wouldn't want to put a dye in.

Cheers.

For that printer, the colors are dye anyway. Text black is pigment, and
good vendors should supply that. I use Hobbicolors, FWIW.
