card reader vanishes after update

I recently got Win XP Pro. So to get ready to
install it, i backed up my files and did a system restore
to start fresh. After installing XP Pro without any
glitches, I proceeded to update windows through the
microsoft automatic update page. However, everytime
after installing the XP Service Pack, the card readers
integrated in the computer stops working. It is not even
showing up in My Computer, as it did before. I have
tried reinstalling the software that came with the
computer...nothing. Please help!!!

Have you checked with the PC manufacturer to see if there has been an
update for the card readers - to recognize the SP?
 
Since the computer came with XP Home Edition, they only
support the original software. I wrote them an email as
well, and that is what they said. they also said that i
should be able to reinstall the card reader software
again to fix the problem, but it does not work. The
files on the website are only the original installer
files of the software.
