I am a Final year student, studying Mechanical and Material Engineering. Some of my friends and I are think of starting up a small company making custom PC case, made to order and designed for the customer. These cases would be mainly produced from Carbon fibre and Kevlar composites. So I was wondering is there much demand out there for these cases and any other feed back would be much appreciated. We are currently making a few test cases working in line with a leading manufacture of carbon fibre products. We will keep you posted in our progress and look forward to any ideas or interest you have in our idea.

I do not mean to be discouraging at all but have you considered the cost aspect of this business? How much you think a custom made PC case will cost? Unless it is competitive there is very little chance of the business taking off.

I am just playing the devil's advocate!

Firstly thanks for the replies!
Answers to some of your questions:
Carbon fibre is around 3 times lighter than aluminium and 6 times lighter than steel which will work well for the LAN party people. Carbon fibre has a very low expansion due to heat and about the heat dissipation this is really not a big factor in pc cases like the guy said above it¡¦s a bit of a ¡¥red herring¡¦. The main factors with heat being removed from the case are the temperature of the air coming in and the speed of the flow of air. Carbon fibre looks great when manufacture correctly, I have seen some people making front faces and side panels for there computers and they look ok, but the way they making them does not produce the greatest results, for this you will need vacuum cambers, ovens and auto cavers which we have the opportunity to use.

I totally agree about the cost aspects these sorts of cases will be for the higher end of the PC cases market around the 80 - 190 pound price range. With this you will have a totally custom case. You can choose how many hard discs, floppy and cd-rom spaces you want. How many, position and size fans you would like, colour of the leds and so on.
Look forward to any more ideas and questions!
Thanks a lot for your reply ļ

i can choose how many hdd's, fdd's and cd-rom space's i want for a fraction of the price if i visit pretty much any computer retailer in the country!

think you'll struggle with this one lads.

If you get within the 80 - 190 pound price range and get good marketing I think you have a good chance, depending on how customised the case will-be. Modded computers are really taking off and for the people that don't have the time or the skill to make them I think it would be a worthwhile service.

What sort of customisation would you offer?, the blowhole here and there, odd window kit is all well and good but if your building a case from scratch i think people would expect something a bit more different, maybe in shape or style.

Would agree with Matt, if you could offer a choice of, say, around four different Case designs, mostly centered around the front fascia, it may have some appeal.

All the other options you've offered sound good, but is it going to be practical and profitable to keep making one-off's to order?

And what colours would be available? I'm assuming as it's carbon fibre, it would be black or...um, black :D
