Capturing Video From ATI Rage Video Theatre Capture Device

Hi,

When I attempt to capture a video, the preview screen and subsequent
captured file display flashing colors. Occassionally, I am not allowed to
capture a file and get a message that more or less says: "Device already in
use by another application" (meaning, I assume, ATI itself).

I can capture fine using the ATI TV/composite option, but the video is
imported in .mp2 which is incompatible with my CD/DVD burning software and I
have no way to convert .mp2 to a different format.

Is there a known way to fix this apparent incompatibility betyween MM2 and
ATI short of aquiring additional software? If not, what software is
recommended to rectify this issue?

Thanks in advance,

Terry Davidson

I assume you want to capture video from a composite/S-Video connection, then
edit and burn a DVD that will play in a conventional DVD player hooked up to
a TV.

1) If you simply re-name the .MP2 extension to .MPG there shouldn't be a
problem. Make a copy of your .MP2 file (right click copy, right click paste)
then re-name the extension of the copied version.
2) Run the copied file through your DVD software.

Additionally,

Does your ATI not have the capability to set a capture format, size, bit
rate et? If it does, then you should set it to mpeg2, variable bit rate
(VBR), 8,000 kbps, 720 X 480 etc.

Didn't the ATI come with video editing software that recognizes .MP2?

I wouldn't mess with WMM for this, the quality and the extra conversion
aren't worth it.

You assumed correctly...

I'm using NTI CD/DVD Maker 7 Platinum...tried renaming the extension, but it
would not allow. Which prompted my original thread.

Yeah, ATI does have capture format options - only I wasn't clever enough to
look there. Here's what I did:

Created custom MPEG1 format(since NTI seemed pretty adamant about wanting
MPEG 1 only)/NTSC(525)/720x480/44.100 KHz 16 bit stereo/Delacing - yes/Visual
Masking - yes/4 P Frames/2 B Frames/8.0 M bites second/75(of 100)Motion
Estimation/ Quality/Motion Estimation Ranges -32Hor. - 16Vert.

Yes, ATI recognizes MP2, it's the NTI software that stalled me.

I don't have a clue what anything means from the audio specs onward. I'm
only guessing that 8.0 bites per second is the 8000kbps your recommended and
would welcome any additional comments/corrections as you see fit about the
above settings.

Appreciate your guidance - thanks a million!

Looked up NTI, doesn't appear this software will create DVD's that will play
in a conventional DVD player hooked up to a TV. But, it will make VCD's or
SVCD's (which are MPEG1 quality) that will play in a player and, it will make
"data" DVD's.

For example, if you have an MPEG2 file and you burn that file onto a DVD
with your NTI, all you're doing is making a "data" DVD. In order for a
conventional player to play a movie, you have to run the MPEG2 file through
DVD editing software that will create VOB IFO BUP etc. files that will tell
the player what it needs to know to play the movie.

Bottom line, if you want to create DVD's that will play in a conventional
player hooked up to your TV, you will require additional software. If you
only want to create VCD's or SVCD's that will play in your player, then your
NTI will work.

Your ATI card should have come with DVD editing software that recognizes
..MP2. ULEAD Video Studio will recognize it. (Curious that I can rename my
..MP2's to .MPG?)
