I have windows movie maker but it only records
audio...audio is the only "device" recognised, it says I
have no video device...I am new to this, what does it
mean?? It came preloaded with Windows XP so why doesn't
it allow me to load a dvd or anything else to edit...not
much point calling it movie maker if all you can do is
record audio..please help!
Cheers

If you want to put a dvd in a player and hope to edit it, I'm afraid you
can't, not even with apps costin £000's pounds. Editing apps work best with
dv-avi files which come from digital camcorders. There are many other ways
of getting these files, and MM can also edit to a degree mpeg2 files, which
are similar but not the same to the files on a recorded dvd.
It would help if you said what it was you were connecting, how it is
connected and to what device in the pc.
In the mean time I suggest a few days reading www.papajohn.org will tell you
most of what you want to know.

Thanks for all of this Graham. So I can't edit DVD's,
that's no problem. The problem I have though is that
there is no VIDEO DEVICE recognised on my movie maker.
There is only an audio DEVICE. So I can't even edit
the "practice" files that they give you. How do I get a
VIDEO device?

It's not impossible to edit dvd's just not at all straight forward, maybe I
didn't make that very clear.

As for the other problem.
You should just be able to import the sample movie from your hard drive, you
don't need anything connected to do this, so I don't know why you can't. You
go to import and look for the sample movie in programmes>movie maker and
import it to collections.

What video device are you trying to connect and how?
