What hardware is recommended to capture old VCR tapes and new DVDs onto the
PC to edit in Windows Movie Maker?

Sorry, should have clarified the "new DVD's" with - DVD recorder movies.
Thanks though.
- But in regards how should I capturre the media? - Should it be in MPEG,
MPEG2, etc...?
- As I would like to capture the media onto the PC, then use Movie Maker to
edit clips and create a layout, then put music behind it. Then ultimately
create DVD's for my family, and even post it onto my website.
- - Is this all possible with Movie Maker?

I like a product called DVDXpressDX2 from ADS Tech for analog or DVD capture
from any standard VCR or DVD that has either Svideo or RCA plug type of
video output. You hook up the device to your VCR/DVD and its USB to the
computer. It is provided with capture software that is very simple to use
(and it will capture ANY video) and it also is provided with ULead's Video
Studio 9SE which will edit and save video in many formats, including .wmv so
you can use WMM if desired (but since I have been using this set of
software, I haven't used WMM. It will even burn DVDs of the final product.
Cost is about $75 US at Wal-Mart. Can be had for more or less in other
stores.

The unit LVTravel suggested will work the same as the Dazzle90 basically so
either one will work to capture the analog signal. I can't speak about the
one LV recommended but I know using the Dazzle90 you can capture via Movie
Maker as a High Quality NTSC video. (WMV extension) to edit and save to your
computer.
Then you need DVD Authoring software to create your DVD from the final
edited video.
