I have a Mini DV Sony Handycam. Why won't Movie Maker 2 allow me to capture
in DV-AVI format?
How can I?

Thanks for you message. I am using that connection, but it is in gray and it
won't allow me to click on it as an option. I am using the firewire that
came with my camcorder plugged into the firewire connection in the front of
my Dell PC dimension 4600...
I don't know what could be going on. I must be doing something wrong.

My Dimension 4600 only has two USB 2 ports and a
headphone jack on the front, in the recess at the bottom.
Are you sure you know the difference between USB &
Firewire? Firewire uses a much smaller connector, in
general -- it's less than half the size of a USB plug/port.
..

You're right!! I don't know the difference then! Where do I find the
firewire port and can I buy one to fit my Sony DCR-TRV22 MiniDV?

start by finding what Sony calls the iLink connection on your camcorder...
the cable plugs into it. Take the camcorder to a local store and ask about
the connection cables.

The camcorder uses 4 pins... and the cables come in two types... 4 pins and
6 pins. The choice of cable will be what connection is on your computer. If
you don't have a connection, then you need to purchase and install a
firewire card....

Hello,

Sony uses something called iLink. The rest of the world call this Firewire. You
have to use that method to capture DV-AVI video.

Your camera manual should tell you where the socket is, and if like me you
received both cable and card with your camera, you simply plug them in and
Windows XP will automatically tell you the device has been recognized by
playing a musical note and displaying a dialog asking what you want to do.

On the subject of the card. Its only suitable for conventional domestic desktop
or tower systems....if you have a laptop you may be lucky and have a firewire
port already installed. If you are in this position take note that the Texas
Instruments chipset has been known to perform badly. If you do not already have
a port you can buy a slide in card. I don't know what they cost, but you can
bet its going to be a heck of a lot more than the quite cheap cards presently
available.

Whether you have a laptop or tower, if you find that you have a built in
firewire port and discover that it does not work well with Movie Maker, you can
disable it in the device manager and install your own....this has proved
successful for a number of users in the past.

Hope that all helps.
