capturing audio from a video clip

As an educator I often find video snippits (such as *.avi) on line and
download to show in class. Up 'till now I have used a microphone connected to
a hi fi headset to capture the audio (directly) from my speaker that
accompanies the video. The resulting sound, however, is not very good. Can
anyone suggest how the audio might be captured internally or directly, that
is, not from the speaker output? Any suggestions along these lines would be
greatly appreciated......Thanks

Surely if you are downloading .avi files, they must already have the
audio that you want embedded in them. Or are you wanting just the audio
part of the file to play back?

Easily accomplished using Movie Maker.

In Windows Movie Maker....
To save only the audio track of a video clip...
drag the video to the "Audio/Music" track.
Then go to...File / Save Movie File / ect...ect......

This will result in a .wma audio file. Be sure
to drag the clip all the way to the left on the
timeline or you will have dead air at the
beginning.

John,
Thanks for you response, but I'm afraid that you misinterpreted my query. I
use both the audio as well as the video. There are two problems associated
with capturing the audio output with a miucrophone from the speaker. First
the audio quality is extremely poor and second the audio is rarely in sync
with the video. Nothing can be more distracting than watching a speaker whose
lips are not forming the words that one hears. Telling students to stop
watching the mouth doesn't wash with a college group. BTW I use a program
called SNAGIT (by Techsmith) to capture the clip. My query to them on this
subject has not been very enlightening. I hope the Windows Newsgroup will do
better.

What am I supposed to think when the subject line
clearly states: "Capturing audio from a video clip"?

Anyway...if you post a link to an example of the
clips you are trying to download I may be able to
offer some ideas on downloading the complete
files.

In retrospect you are right. I could have titled this much more succinctly. A
typical web video, "Cern in 3 minutes" can be retrieved from:
. As you will gather my course
deals with high energy physics....Let me know what you think can be
done...Again, thanks...............CinciDave

Easy enough...for YouTube clips the
following free software will help you
download the files to your hard drive
in a format of your choice.

save2pc Light
http://tinyurl.com/3xfqr2
or...
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Encoders-Converter-DIVX-Related/save2pc-Light.shtml
(click the Red download button...on the next
screen click, "Softpedia Secure Download (US)")

Also...the following online converter
may be useful:

vixy.net
http://vixy.net/

====================================
When using the http://vixy.net/ site with YouTube...
the first step simply converts the video clip to
a different format...avi for example. Next...
you have to download the converted file to your
hard drive as follows:

After the file conversion is finished you will see
the following dialog on the screen:

Conversion Finished. Please download the following link:.
Download the converted video

You can right click "Download the converted video"
and choose... "Save Target As"...this will open the
"Save As" dialog that allows you to choose a save
location on your hard drive. Choose...Desktop...
and click the "Save" button.

After the file is downloaded you can go to your
desktop and move the file to any folder you
choose.

Note: I've noticed that sometimes the conversion
will fail...I think this is due to high traffic on the site...
the solution is to simply try again.

Cheers.

John,
I've had an opportunity to try save2pc and it works fine with a youtube
video file as does vixy. I really had no difficulty and the audio was as good
as the original. However due to the much of the subject matter which I seek,
many of my clips come from resources that neither save2 nor vixy accept. As
an example see:
http://www.space.com/php/video/player.php?video_id=b011031_sp_fermi2. The pro
version, though accepting many more sites, does not cover the ones that I
need other than youtube. Thus, if a more general program exists, I'd be
pleased to try it out. In that regard any and all ideas are welcome, and
John, many thanks. This was a big step in the right direction.

You're welcome...thanks for the update.

Your best bet would be to do a Google search for...
