Captured video too dark

I am trying to download some video from my camcorder. I use firewire to downloard but when I preview it on my computer it is too dark. If I hook the camcorder up to my vcr, it shows up fine. I realize that clip was made in a dark room but why does it show up fine on the vcr but so dark on my computer?
 
computer screens display video differently to tv's, which video is designed
to be shown on, also the monitor may be old/notset up properly. To see if
this is correct, do a little edit and then send the finished movie back to
the cam and play on the tv, hopefully it'll be the same as the original.
