I have some video on a dvd, can I capure into MM2 and edit it? If so can
someone please tell me how.
Thanks

Rusty H.

MM2 doesn't import the MPEG-2 files on a DVD.... you need to use conversion
tools to get AVI files and then use those to import.

See the Importing Source Files > Video > Discs page of my site.

Hello,

If the DVD is not copy protected then download the 30 day trial version of
Nero 6 from www.nero.com. Using Nero Vision Express you import the DVD and
edit it still using Vision Express with no loss of quality...you can then
create a new DVD again using all of the features of Vision Express.

If you still want to put it into Movie Maker you simply Import the DVD as
mentioned above and then use the export option to create a DV-AVI file
which Movie Maker will understand...DV-AVI is the best input format for
MOvie Maker...no matter what your final format is going to be.

John, Thnks for the help... I am not the brightest bulb on the tree, so, How
do I export it and change it to a dv-avi file?
I thought renaming it would do it, but you know, it did not.
I was able to download Nero and import the DVD to my hard drive and save it
there, but I would like to use MM and I am lost.
Your helop is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

The process I described is a feature in Nero 6 Reloaded. via the
sub-program called NeroVision Express Ver.3 Basically you tell the program
you want to Make a DVD or any video disk standard below that...VCD etc.
Once you start the process you are given the opportunity to CAPTURE live
Video, Import a file (of various types) or to import an existing DVD (or
any type of disc below that)

The import feature strips away any menu system leaving you with the basic
files that are the actual video. Once those files are available to you you
can continue and create your own DVD with menus you design yourself OR you
can EXPOR the video file so as to make a brand new file on your hard drive.
The format of that file can be any of the commonly known and one moderately
new formats (MPEG-4) The format I suggested to you in the other message was
DV-AVI. DV-AVI is the best format for use with Movie Maker.

Movie Maker itself can not import a DVD file...it can of course capture
from a camera or import a file provided it is acceptable to Movie Maker,
Loosely...Movie Maker has trouble with any format type that starts with an
"M"

As you now have Nero take the following steps

1) Run Nero StartSmart and select NeroVision Express

2) Select MAKE DVD (It does not matter that you are not actually going to
make a DVD here...its a means to an end)

3) Because you have already imported the DVD you may now see that file in
the large left hand pane...if not click ADD VIDEO FILES navigate to the
location you saved the DVD to and select the files to import. You may get a
dialog saying that Nero has detected multiple files and asks if you want
them joined together...Answer YES

4) You now have a decision...edit with Nero (very good once you understand
the slightly odd interface) or edit with Movie Maker (The best way to go
for a beginner) To edit with Movie Maker click the EXPORT button at the
bottom of the window and in the new Window click on the drop down box (top
right) and select DV and in DV-AVI Type select TYPE 1 or Type 2 and making
a note of the location the file is going to be saved to at the bottom of
the screen (You can change that name and location) click on EXPORT.

5) Start Movie Maker and import the file just created in Nero...and away
you go :)

Some pointers.
===========

Take note that converting to ANY format from the MPEG format that is on the
DVD and then re-creating that MPEG format after editing in Movie Maker will
cause a loss of quality. Its for this reason that I never edit in Movie
Maker and file taken from a DVD...instead I use Nero which can edit MPeg
files with no loss of quality.

Nero will allow you to create a DV-AVI file that has a much higher data
rate than Movie Maker is used to getting. This will cause the preview in
Movie Maker to become very bitty. The final edited version though will have
been brought down to the level Movie Maker is used to having and it WILL
play quite normally. If the data rate is so high that it causes you serious
problems then click on the MORE button and edit the data rate by first
selecting CUSTOM and then enter the value to be used.

Contrary to some comments way back Movie Maker will accept both Type 1 and
Type 2 files (I just tried again to make sure I am right)

Instead of selecting DV you can choose CUSTOM then further down select AVI
etc..

By exporting to the DV file format a video that has a smaller size (width x
height) to the DV you might expect the result to be quite poor (as it is
often in Movie Maker) in that it is "blocky" or "pixelated". Instead it
seems that Nero is using one of the better algorithms when up-sizing the
image. The result is not perfect....but it is certainly quite good...I just
did it with the video clip "Alien" which you can see on my website (Its in
the FUNNY section)

If you need further help do please ask.
