Capture DVD home movies

My new HP computer came with Windows Movie Maker and Windows Media Player
software. I am trying to use Windows Movie Maker to edit it and add
background music to old 8mm and super 8 family movies, which presently a
local company transfer to a DVD formate for me.
My computer has a CD-writer/DVD-rom drive. It also enables me to edit
digital photos, record music CDs, watch DVD movies and archive photos and
data to CDs.
When I place our family's DVD movies in the CD/DVD drive I am able to
capture it with the Windosw Media Player, but if I try to capture it with the
Windows Movie Maker a sign appears reading: "No capture devise has being
detected". in other words, it cannot detect the CD/DVDrom drive.
My question is: What type of device do I need to add to my computer to
capture the movie and edit it.
I would like to edit, add some "fancy" transitions, add titles and
background music.
My wife and I wish to send these DVDs to our grandchildren, which are about
the same age as our son's when these movies were made years ago.
Thank you for your help.

When you try to go to a drivr you are not really capturing, you need a
capture card. Try to use Import Video instead to Movie Maker.

Hi Reno,
My computer model is an HP Pavilion A600N desktop. It has a memory card
reader, USB 2.0 and FireWire ports, in addition, there ports with the
following names: SmartMedia/xD
MMC/SD
CompactFlash I/II
MMC/SD
There are two video companies in this area that transfer 8mm and Super8
movies to DVD. The price varies according to the lenght of the movie and if
there is sound.
One company charges 11 C to 16C per foot, depending in the lenght. Sound is
extra.
The other charges 10C per foot to transfer to video plus one charge of $8.95
to transfer to DVD. Minimun is $40.00 to add bacground music is 2C per foot.
I have about 17 movies left to be transfered to DVD. each is 400+ feet long,
some are 8mm and others are Super 8.
The computer has a CD-writer/DVD-rom combo.
Thank you Rino,
Manny

Hello there,

My question is: What type of device do I need to add to my computer to
capture the movie and edit it.

You do not need any devices at all. All you need is a program like Nero 6
Reloaded. Using that program you can convert DVD files (they have a VOB
extension) into MPeg-2 files. Once that is done you can edit the video within
Nero, create menus etc and burn it back to a DVD disk (Ok you do need a DVD
burner if you have not already got one) I do this and similar operations almost
daily!!!

I have just started writing a tutorial on Nero which is on my website...at the
moment the only section is Editing a Video captured from a non copyrighted DVD,
I think that sort of fits your question :)

There are some quite spectacular effect that can be added within Nero, but
disappointingly it seems you can only apply one at a time (I have yet to
confirm that) Fortunately that's not the end of the story. Once your DVD has
been captured to your hard drive by NEro you can use one of its other function
"Export" and save/convert the MPeg video to the standard DV-AVI format used by
Movie Maker...when finished in Movie Maker you can import the finished movie
back into Nero and create a Video as outline (roughly) above.

With regard to your comments about detecting etc with Media Player. MEdia
Player can NOT capture DVD video. It can display it on screen which is of
course a completely different thing. With regard to Movie Maker capturing...it
can ONLY capture from a DV camera or source (which may be an analog to digital
converter)...You DO NOT need any of that kit for the job at hand.

You can download a trial version of the Nero software from this link
http://www.nero.com/en/index.html I think it lasts 30 days. If you buy a DVD
burner you will want this type of software anyway. My personal opinion of Nero,
which seems to be supported by most, is that it is an excellent tool, its
operation is not always intuitive but once you understand it it becomes a very
easy to use program. I scrapped Easy CD/DVD Version 6 in favour of Nero 6.

If you take the suggested route and need specific help, you can ask here or
keep checking on the tutorial on my site. Hope that helps a bit

Hi ... what you probably need is software that can rip the dvd titles from
your home movie dvd to edit and make the changes you want...I dont think that
MM can do that for you, provided that the DVD home movies are in a format
that your software can read...?

I use Canopus LetsEdit2 for capture and edit/transitions/xtra music..etc it
can rip .vob files from a non protected DVD for your editing needs, there are
other software out there that you can use to do the same thing..it would be
advisable to get a video capture card..for future needs.

If your tring to edit from an original Home Movie DVD allready made the you
need the correct DVD Ripping tools(software)

hope this helps

Hello Rino,

Please take this in the way it is intended. Please get some one to interpret
into your native language what I have previously said. The things you say
can not be done are being done by people all over the world. I strongly
suggest that until you have properly mastered the English language that you
remain quiet. You are making yourself look a little silly.

Ola John Kelly!
Thank you for your comments.
Is Nero 6 Reloaded available in the U.S. ?
Is there another software that is comparable to Nero?
I am completly new in this field and I need all the help I can get.
Gracias amigo!

Hello,

It might be that Nero.com are using IP details to determine which web page to
show you. Its quite a common technique.

I have to say that it might be a case for concern as I can see no reason to
give the product a variation in the name other than a commercial one....Today
in the USA you have Ultra and tomorrow you can upgrade (at a cost perhaps) to
Reloaded and of course the opposite in Europe ....We have Reloaded today,
tomorrow we might have an upgrade to Ultra. There might be a lesser
reason....exactly what it might be I can't guess. It would be interesting to
hear an official reply from Nero
