Hello,

I have Word 2002. When I add a caption to an embedded picture I find the
caption is not 'attached' to the picture, if I move the picture the caption
does not move with it. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

KK

How this works depends on the formatting of the picture and the caption:

1. If the picture is In Line with Text, then the caption should have been
inserted as a plain text paragraph. In that case, format the paragraph the
picture is in (assuming it is above the caption) as "Keep with next." This
will ensure that the picture and caption will stay together on a page (Word
will not split them with a page break), but you will still have to select
them both together if you want to copy/paste or drag and drop them somewhere
else.

2. If the picture is wrapped, then the caption will most likely have been
inserted in a text box. This is unsatisfactory for a number of reasons.
Although you can group the picture and the text box and thereby keep them
together, Word will not "see" the text in your text box, and so you will not
be able to create cross-references to your caption or include it in a Table
of Figures.

If you can make the picture and caption inline, that is by far the most
satisfactory arrangement, but if you must wrap text around them, then the
best workaround is to put them together in a frame, as follows:

a. Make the picture inline (click on the picture to display the Picture
toolbar, then select In Line with Text from the Text Wrapping menu).

b. Select the caption in the text box and copy it, paste it outside the text
box (below the picture), and delete the text box.

c. Select the picture and caption together and use the Insert Frame button
on the Forms toolbar to put them both in a frame (you can later add the
Frame button to your Insert menu using Tools | Customize).

d. You'll need to remove the border from the frame (Format | Borders and
Shading) and fine-tune its positioning using Format Frame.
