I am a two (maybe 3 ) finger typist, 49 and too old to change. I am looking
for something to stop me from hitting caplocks when shifting and TYPINT LIKE
tHIS for a couple of lines before I look back at the screen. I looked at
Smartcaps and it seems great. Is there a freeware equivalent.

Smartcaps basically prevents CAPLOCKS from turning on by a short pressing of
the key. You have to hold it for a second before it switches over and a
voice is played saying CAPLOCKS ON if I press it by mistake. It does the
same for NUMLOCK.

Any suggestions?

I dunno, but maybe some alarm can be set when the cap-lock and/or num lock key is pressed. I don't know of a program right now, but perhaps someone with some programming knowledge could suggest a bat file with an alarm set for these keys?

The Wonderful Icon will do this using it's 'do nothing' function.

Hi, besides the CAPLOCK thing you are looking for, perhaps
you would find this one useful, too. It largely reduces the
keystrokes one needs to press:

http://www.clasohm.com/lmt/en/

Description:
"Like Microsoft's AutoComplete, LetMeType helps you enter
text, but regardless of the program you use. Running in the
background, it analyses what you type. After some time it has
collected enough information to guess a word after you have
typed the first two or three letters. A list of the most
probable words is displayed, and you can select one with a
single keystroke or just continue typing..."

What operating sys..?... if XP the best I've found is at ...
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~brockh/kmapper.html ...it lets you
set most any key to do what you want... (I set the caps-lock to be
another left shift...)

For years I used a little utility called Anticapslock with win98, no
idea where I downloaded it. As I recall, there was also a pro version
with the sole difference being that its not-so-lovely icon would
disappear from the systray. (I was also using traysaver, which hides
selected icons from view, so what the hey.)

I use it on another computer. The main difference in using it
unregistered is that you have to reset it on each restart which is a
bit of a pain. Registration is $10.

Easiest thing to do is pull the CapsLock key of the pin. It can always be
put back on if you want. I've been doing this for years. The CapsLock is
about the most useless key on a keyboard.

That might hurt my cat.

I don't see anyone recommending FirstCap..
http://digilander.libero.it/falsinfab/falsinsoft/firstcap.htm

I, too, am a 2 finger typist, ...but I use the capslock key on occasion,
and like to simply be told when I have hit it...FirstCap does this, and
a lot more if you wish.

Downloading right now. Both versions.

I am surprised that it went from 372 k in version 2.1 to 1484 k in version
3.0. In the old dos days, I remember you never installed a version x.0, you
always waited for x.1. :^) Let someone else figure out the bugs.

I will probably use 2.1. I wonder what all the bloat is from 2.1 to 3.0,
maybe just language support. Web site is a one page simple site so no real
info there.

I will post my results after a few days usage.

Windows can tell you too,
at least 2K and XP,
if configured accordingly.

RTFM ;-)

I suppose, as he says, because of requests for more features... At
least he offers both versions and doesn't assume that bigger is better,
as so many do...*grin*

I did happen to get the newer version, but it doesn't seem to use many
resources once running,,so... *shrug*
