can't write to workgroup shares on vista B2 machine

I put Vista beta 2 on one of the five machines in my workgroup (wired
network, static IP addresses). The other machines can see and read the shared
drives, but not write to them ("Access is denied"). Assuming this was a
permissions issue, I gave "Everyone" full control on the drives, but still no
joy. Suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

I also occasionally get this message on my server share - I can't understand
it either. However I went through the properties of the server share on my
server, and made sure that specific users on my Vista machine had access
(read and write) and the guest (test account) had only read permissions -
after that it was fixed.

But a bug wouldn't go a miss :o)

Is it necessary to grant some sort of permission on the Vista "server" to
specific users of the other machines? On XP workgroups, "Everyone" applies to
everyone on the network.

I created a share on the vista machine that gives full permisson to everyone.
I can't access this share on the XP machine without providing credentials.
They are both in the same network too. Either machine can't see the other
when I go to veiw workgroup computer. I also turned off "Use Sharing Wizard"
Something is not right here.

turning off simple file sharing didn't work for me either. went into safe
mode and fussed with permissions and ownership and basically loosened
everything up. the remaining problem for me is that the xp machines can't
write to the shares on the vista machine.

Maybe its UAP, try disabling and see if it helps. Click Start > All Programs
Accessories > Run > type in MSCONFIG > OK > Tools (tab) > scroll down >
select "Disable UAP" > click "Launch" > close "Command Prompt" > restart
system for changes to take effect.

If that does not help, Open Control Panel (set to "Class View") > open
Windows Firewall > Exceptions tab > check "Network Discovery" > OK, try
accessing the share again from XP.

Also remember disable Simple File Sharing on the XP machine, maybe that was
causing the blockage.

Ok here's what I did for the folder sharing problem. It used to be in XP
that if you set permissions to Everyone they could access that share without
setting any security for that folder. Apprently Vista does not work this way.
Not only do you have to set the permissions for Everyone you also got to set
the security for Everyone. I set both permissions and security to read
access and I was able to access the share from my XP Machine with no problems
or security warnings.

I also noticed that if you are working on a wireless network Vista like to
recreate the network again. So make sure you don't have dups of your network
going on with different settings.

As for the network discovery I'll give you suggestions a try.

Here's another problem if someone else can check out. Create a share and
give administrators group full permission and full security. Then try to
access that drive from an XP machine using a username from the adminstrators
group other than the local administrator. I keep getting access denied
errors.

Thanks

Won't help - if the permissions are still the same on the network share,
changing a layout of what to share won't actually change the permissions -
so essentially you're just trying to add a files to a still broken network
share.

Try turning off UAC - might help?

Uh, er, having trouble figuring out the difference between permissions and
security in Vista. Wonder if Andre would mind a giving a quick step-by-step.
Turning of UAC doesn't help for me, but it's the first thing I do with a new
Vista beta. The warnings given even to an administrator drive me nuts <vbg>.

Well, Permissions is an aspect of Security in Windows Vista even Windows XP.

Try this, right click the folder you want to share > click Properties >
Sharing (tab) > Advanced Sharing > "Yes, share this folder" click
"Permissions" > under "Permissions for Everyone > check Allow "Full Control"

See if you can access and write to the Share now.

Unfortunately sharing to "Everyone" is broken in Beta 2. Regardless of the
permissions you specify, guests and users without passwords will not be able
to write to folders shared over the network. There are two bugs in beta 2
that prevent this from
working correctly.

BUG 1:
There is a bug that limits users without passwords to readonly access over
the network. I think this is the main source of your problems. One side
effect of this is printing to a printer on your vista computer over the
network is broken.
Workaround: In an ELEVATED command window type "Net localgroup users guest
/add". (To get an elevated command window, Start > All Programs >
Accessories. Right click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as
administrator".)

BUG 2:
There is another bug that prevents users without passwords from accessing
files shared under c:\users.
Workaround: Right-click on the users folder, properties, sharing, Advanced
Sharing, Permissions, Add, type "Everyone", enter, change permissions to
full control. (Note: Don't do this if your computer is on an untrusted
network)

Both of these bugs will be fixed post beta2.

Dear Mr. Sweeney,

Thanks so much for clarifying these two bugs, and for letting us know
they'll be fixed in future releases. That's why they call this process Beta...

The functionality required by the users on this thread are critical, simple
and essential to why we use Windows, and why we look forward to Microsoft's
definitive correction of the "ReadOnly" problem on basic network shared
directories.

I'll try your workaround tomorrow morning PST: My secretary using Windows XP
Professional needs to edit some of my MS Word drafts, these now stored in a
shared directory on my Windows Vista machine. Simple procedure; we think
Microsoft can help us...

Is there a Beta 3 due to come out, or will a KB or Windows Update fix the
two issues you've identified?

Regards!
