Can't write to DVD

My objective is to archive my home videos onto DVD. I have a Sony 8 mm
Camcorder, several years old now. I just purchased a Sony Computer with
Windows XP movie maker. The hardware came complete with the RCA jacks for
input from my camera. I can download my home video to my hard drive, but it
will not let me write that information to a DVD. I have the same problem
with the Sony "Click to DVD" software. With the Sony software I get a very
plain "there's a Error" message. With the windows software the message
relates the problem to the "codec". What do I need to do?

I'm sure there must be an easy fix to this. It's probably operator error.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ed

hello,

Movie Maker can not write to a DVD

Movie Maker is a video EDITOR only

You would probably have had a DVD creating program supplied with you DVD
burner....you should read the helpfile on how to use the program. If you have
purchased DVD authoring software you should approach the tech support for your
software

Papajohn,

Thanks for your input.

It is analog. I can capture the video and edit it. What I can't do is burn
a DVD with it. I thought I may need to download some codec files thinking
this is some sort of conversion problem. What do you think?

I got another response saying the Movie Maker software was not a burning
software but only an editing sw. But, I'm almost sure it walked me all the
way through to writing a DVD, I'll have to check later. The Sony "Click to
DVD" gives me the same type of error and I know that it's intended to create
and burn DVD's.

Hello,

To satisfy yourself on what Movie Maker can not do...check out the help file
and look for DVD burning...Its a great resource the Helpfile...it tells you all
the things that can be done and none of the things that cannot be done!!

Hello,

Making or burning a DVD is not part of the features of Movie Maker unless
you are using the MCE version 2005 as your operating system.

And even then Movie Maker DOES NOT burn or even create the DVD structure.....

God knows why it is that some people say the Movie Maker MCE 2005, a basic
fudge that also requires a significant increase in resources, can burn
DVD's...NO NO NO NO NO

Thanks John. My next step is to question Sonys Click to DVD software support
as to why their sw gives me this error.

Hello,

Here is an extract from a standard reply that you should try first. It "might"
solve your problems.

I will try that again........

1) Download the full version of DirectX Ver 9.0c, Media Player 9 (10 if you
prefer), and Service Pack 2(SP2).

2) Reboot you computer and Install DirectX

3) Reboot again and install Windows Media Player

4) Reboot yet again and install Service Pack 2

5) Reboot one more time

Yes it sounds very tedious, but if you want to be certain all file locks are
removed so that the correct files can be installed this is the way you have to
go.

It is very important that you only download the full versions of these programs
and that you DO NOT attempt an install over the internet.
