Can't write files to my CD

When I try to send a file or to drag and drop a file into my CD I get the
error message:- Error Copying File or Folder - Cannot create or replace
'file name' Access is denied - make sure the disk is not full or write
protected and that the file is not currently in use.

The CD is a new unused one. It can't be write protected, can it? and the
file was not in use.

Unless you have software installed specifically for the purpose of dragging
and dropping files or saving directly to CD, it cannot be done natively in
XP. In order to do what you are trying to do, you need an application such
as Easy CD Creator's Direct CD component or Nero's InCD component to handle
this task. If you purchase the application, be sure to purchase a version
compatible with XP.

Another error message I get is - disk is write protected - But it's a new
one fresh out of the box.

Hi stickems,

Have you had trouble with your cd-rw like this before? If not, then possibly
recording has been disabled in the drive properties. If it is, just
re-enable recording and you should be ok.
A write protected blank disc? It's hard to say, but I would guess not. I've
heard of recording problems with some non-brand name generic cds. Have you
tried a different brand of media?

Hi Michael,

I experimented with this and it works for me. Files, (data and music), were
dragged from two different folders directly onto the cd icon in explorer,
the record setup wizard did it's thing, a few mouse clicks and the cd was
burned perfectly. Unless I misunderstand the d'and'd process, this is what I
did here.

hi! Here are instructions for writing a file to CD in Windows XP without
third-party software:

Nope, that' not how my XP works.

Hello again stickems,

I followed the link instructions and the process was painless. Have you
tried to burn this way when your cd drive was working properly? I do use a
third party program because it gives me other options that that XP's native
software does not, but XP's method works well if you want to just back up
files and such without all the bells and whistles.

XP is supposed to be able to write to CD and I have written to the CD
with another program using the same type of blank CD. But, for some
reason I can't send files to or drag and drop them onto my CD writer.
XP uses a form of disk mastering to write to a CD, similar to how an audio
CD is created. XP's integrated burning function does not support drag and
drop or saving directly to CD from an application.
