Can't watch streaming video... error

I am unable to watch streaming video because the internal player crashes and
IE must then close down. When clicking on tech data I see this info:
ppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: gtcodec.dll
ModVer: 1.10.0.0 Offset: 00006782

Of course this is followed by a few hundred lines of additonal
codes/numbers/etc. I'v tried emptying cache, temo files, hisory, etc. I have
run Norton virus scan and spyware removers as well. Not sure what else to do.
I am running XP. This problem started about 4 days ago. Also, IE is very
sluggish. Anyone have this same problem or know what I should do? Thanks.

Hi R.L. :-)

gtcodec.dll is not a file required by Windows. It is likely a file that has
been added through some 3rd party sofware you have installed, perhaps a
digital camera or some other such software. Apparently the GTCODEC codec is
very badly-behaved and tries to decode formats which it's not designed to
decode and has been causing problems with IE. Try accessing the gtcodec.dll
through Search and renaming it to gtcodec.old to see if that eliminates the
error.

Hope this helps.

Jan,
Thanks! Your suggestion resoved the problem. After renaming the file, I
opened a link to a streaming video on msn.com and a creen popped up asking me
to install a codec file from Microsft. I installed it and the video played
perfectly. I do have a question though. Can I delete the file that is now
named "gtcodec.dll.old"? Thanks again for the help. : )

You're very welcome! I'm glad to hear you were able to resolve your
problem. Good job! Yes, if all is working well you can delete that file.

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.
