Can't view some web sites, get source instead

I've got a screwy little problem in IE 6 (Windows XP Pro SP2). When I
attempt to go to some sites, I get nothing but HTML source code on the
screen. Other identical systems work fine, but not this one. I thought
it might have been a glitch with Norton Internet Security 2005 (a major
PITA which I have uninstalled), but it still happens.

One of the main sites that is always doing this is
http://support.microsoft.com so I can't even go into the MS Knowledge
Base to search for a solution -- even if I could think of a logical set
of words/phrases to search!

I'm hoping I don't have to do a complete reinstall of Windows XP Pro but
if that's the only solution.... Any and all ideas welcome. Thanks in
advance.

I'd try reinstalling IE by itself first to see if the reinstall steps
atop whatever might've been corrupted by something else. Last time I
did this, I had to run the IE install twice. The first time just
refreshes components while the second time replaces them. If that
doesn't work, next I'd boot using the Windows installation CD to do a
Repair (the first one puts you into Recovery Console mode while the
second Repair actually does a repair). However, if you have applied
Service Pack 2 but your install CD doesn't include Service Pack 2, you
don't want to use, say, a Service Pack 1 install CD to repair a Service
Pack 2 installation. You'll need to produce a slipstreamed copy of the
install CD that includes Service Pack 2
(http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp).

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried a reinstall of IE but it didn't
work. Still getting just the HTML code on the screen when attempting to
view http://support.microsoft.com. <sigh>

Any other suggestions before I reluctantly back up all my junk and do a
reload of Windows? I'm wide open to consider any ideas....

Did the IE reinstall actually *replace* components?

Use Spybot or BHO Demon to see what BHOs (browser helper objects) have
been installed and are currently enabled. These can alter behavior of
IE. For any listed, disable them all, restart IE, and see if the
problem went away.
