can't view icons

I used to be able to download icons into a folder, and
just view them as thumbnails as any other image. They
were ico file, not bmps. ALl of the sudden, they all show
as the generic "icon" placeholder graphic. Any idea of
how I can set it to view them as the actual icon? Thanks!

ALL views. it used to show them at different sizes, for
the different views. but now nothing
