I have tried to hookup several windows xp pro computers
on 2 different networks(wired) with no luck.My net work
has 4 other computers xp & win 98 all in the same room
that work fine. The problem is that all were over 35 to
60 feet from the router. They all work fine when hookedup
within 25 feet or shorter. When I hookup win 98 computers
they all work fine over the same lines. Has anyone ever
had a problem with win xp hookup at a longer distance?
HELP!!!! Someone let me know if you can use it over 35 ft
from a router.

Is any of the cabling home-made?
Either the patch leads, or wiring in the walls?

Because this sounds like a classic case of incorrectly wired cat5 cables.

The common wiring error runs OK an 10, but badly / not at all at 100.
The fixed cable runs and the patch cables need to be checked:.....

The correct twisted pairs are not being observed.

It's not enough just to connect 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 6-6.
You need to look at the twisted pairs inside the cable.

The most common error is to use use one pair for pins 1&2,
another pair for pins 3&4, another pair for pins 5&6, and a pair for 7&8.
The wires sit neatly inside the connectors if you do it this way.

Unfortunately, this will not work.
( Well, sometimes on a short run it will, but probably not at 100 )

pins 1&2 need to be a pair.
pins 3&6 need to be a pair.

This causes the wires to cross over each other inside the plugs, and it
seems a bit ugly. But this is the ONLY way it will work. Look at the
pictures at the bottom of this page:

My XP PC is ~75' from my router, and 100baseTX runs just fine.

I suspect your cable is miswired.
