I have to older drives I'm trying to get to work together but won't...

On the Primary IDE channel...

Master: Maxtor 40.0 GB AT Model D740X-6L (On maxtor site it says 80
GB but the drive is 40 GB)
Slave: Maxtor 40.0 GM ATA Fireball 3

I've tried both as master and slave. The fireball allways seems to the
trouble...
both using Cable Select didn't work either...

You mean the BIOS didn't detect them?
Did you try with a different controller (e.g. another PC, with a
different motherboard)?

Yeah, those ex Quantum drives could have
big problems coexisting with some other drives.

No way around it except to put it on the other ribbon
cable with one of the optical drives basically.

You do need a cable select cable for that. With drives that old, it
may not be a cable select cable, particularly if its only got 40 wires.
