Hi,

My friend's computer goes to 100% CPU utilisation when she
runs Internet Explorer. She's been advised to run Windows
Update to fix it as it's a known bug. Unfortunately, she
can't do that as it tries to use the broken IE. Are
updates available on CD or is there another browser which
will work with Windows Update?

Thanks,
Mike Lewis

Well yes and no. Firefox can access the download of IE6 (for instance) at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
But you must be using IE5 or better to access and use WU. If you prefer to
use a different Web browser, updates to Windows may be downloaded from the
Microsoft Download Center.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en

Once Internet Explorer is installed, you can go to the Windows Update site
by typing http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com into the address bar of
Internet Explorer.

Unfortunately the Update CD just went out of print, and I don't recollect if
it had any IE SP-1 update on it. Unfortunately, the page which listed all of
the updates is also no longer available. :-\
