If I select one of the designes in PowerPoint 2002 such as the one with the
weighing scales, I can change the background color of a slide and the
picture of the scales remains. However, if I start with a blank
presentation and use my own background picture, I cannot change the overall
color of the background, it allows either a custom color or a custom
background picture, but not both. How are the pictures that come with the
PowerPoint templates setup, and how can I use my pictures in the same way?

Cal.

They are set up with the background a gradient fill using the background
color dark > light (eg) with a picture inserted and sent to back. Changing
the background colour change the gradient color

Thanks John, but how about other backgrounds such as the template called
"Compass.pot"? Somehow, that picture seems to be embedded in the design and
I can't select it, but it is not a background picture that I can replace.
Incidentally, originally from Lincoln in the UK, I am here in freezing cold
Milwaukee in the USA. How is old Blighty?

Yes you can. Choose View, Master, Slide Master and click on the background
just to the left of the body text placeholder. Now you can drag the compass
drawing around, ungroup it, totally muck it up (well ... that's what I ended up
doing. Bless Undo. Bless bless bless ...)

but it is not a background picture that I can replace.

Hi

UK (In the North where we are) is cold @ clear, really nice winter day with
a fabulous sunset tonight. Has been wet and windy mind and there's snow
forcast next week.

Compass is done exactly as I said above , the picture is a group of several
smaller images and is a bit hard to select as it is nearly the same size as
the text box on the slide master, easier on the title master or select
something and tab till you get to the group

Aha, I see now. Thank you both for your help. I don't use PowerPoint too
much, but this week I have a presentation to do, and I wanted to move away
from the same-old, same-old. Thanks again.
