Can't Use AutoText on a Protected Document

I have a template I want to protect so that the user can
tab directly to data entry fields in the document.
However, when I protect the document to provide this
feature, the autotext is no longer available. This is a
critical feature for the users. How can I set the
template to tab to only data entry fields and still allow
autotext to fill those fields?

This could only be done using a macro. Basically, the macro
would unprotect, insert the entry (from a toolbar list, for
example) then reprotect without losing the user input.
