Hi guys,

I'm going to implement windows 2000 sp4 upgrade using GPO based on computer account in our company LAN. These days I did a lot of times to try, all failed.

Steps I did as the following:

1 created a share folder to save extracted windows 2000 sp4 files. Gave the computer account and system account with full control permission.

2 In AD, created a OU included the computer, and created a GPO pointing to the Update.MSI file in the share folder in the Properties of the OU.

The detailed steps see @ http://www.petri.co.il/w2k_xp_sp_deployment.htm

I have tried many times, all failed. Said in Event Viewer: " ¡¡The error was Access denied.¡¡" So I just guess it should be of a permission issue. Somebody told me that I should put the computer account in a group(I just put an individual computer account in the OU). If so, how can I do it? Who can help me, please?

I remember dealing with this issue.

The problem is probably that the share in which you
placed SP4 files is not Readable by the Computer
Accounts. Remember that there is no user logged onto the
computer when it attempts the install of the software
from the GPO - therefore the computer account must have
at least read/execute access to the share.

I find adding "Domain Computers" with R/E access to the
source share for my apps works a treat.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Jordan

2 questions for you. #1Do the users have access to the
share folder and all files in it? Double check that. #2
The software package is being deployed in the "computer
configuration>software packages" node of the GPO right?
Just to make sure.

not "users" as Service Packs can only be assigned to the
computer configuration side of things. Thus, the users do
not play any role at all in this. It is 99.99% due to the
fact that Domain Computers do not have read permissions (
both share and NTFS )...
