I have installed Defender several times but when I try to do the online
update an error is returned that says, Windows Defender is unable to complete
the update: 0x80244001

Any thoughts on this?

have u found out anything about not being able to update i am having the same
problem... i downloaded it and now i can't update it i get the same error as
you... where do we go to find answers????

That makes three of us (at least)! I get the same "cannot update" error with
the same code, 0x80244001. I googled that number and saw some things that
said it might be firewall-related, but I didn't see any definitive fixes.

I get a similar message but mine is 0x80070422. Service can't be started
because it is disabled or has no enabled devices associated with it.

Brett,

Go to Administrative Tools in the Control Panel and open Services. Scroll
down and find the Windows Defender Service. Under the General tab insure
that the Startup Type is not set to Disabled. If it is set it to Automatic.
Perhaps this will help.

Do Windows Update and autoupdate work normally on this system?

Try going to WindowsUpdate and installing all critical patches offered.

I had the same problem...I went to the Windows Updates Site and selected the
updates needed and everything worked from there. I hope I do not need to do
this every time there is an update...If so, maybe we should get it on the
WSUS server.

Seema as though I'm having the same problem as everyone else, except my Error
Message is 0x8024400a

Well, doing the Windows Update did it for me even though the suggestions
above didn't. I too am hoping that I don't have to do this every time, and
that the updates are automatic.

Thanks very much for everyone's help.

Are you also in an environment where there is a WSUS server? If so, that's
where the updates need to come from.

Based on my own experience and this reference:

http://blog.sedenka.net/2004/09/windowsupdate-v5-proxy-bugfeature.html

I would look at the proxy settings for your connection in Internet Explorer
(either Lan or dialup, depending)

The URL would suggest that you should remove any greyed out settings in the
proxy boxes (check that there is a proxy, remove the settings,
uncheck)--however, I would also suggest that the top box--automatically
detect--may be relevant. If it is checked, uncheck it, and if it is
unchecked, try checking it. I've had both apparently fix balky updates--on
the same network.

I did all was suggested in this post and Worked.

My scenario was that I have repaired Windows XP and after that Windows
Defender stopped updating.

Solution:
Go to Windows Update website and Update the windows box, specially what is
related to Windows Installer, reboot and update.

It worked for me!!
Thank you all.
