Everytime I try to run the updates is says it cannot
connect to the internet. I am on a cable modem and I have
tried the fix as listed in other post. IE does not show
working offline.

This fix does not fix the problem. I have installed the
program on several other computers and it works
flawlessly. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling I
have tried running the repair from the control panel and
nothing seems to help.

Any other suggestions?

Make certain that you aren't using a splitter to get the
cable from the wall to your system, as this will cause
problems. I used a -4 dB splitter given to me by the
cable company, and it has caused the cable connection
from the wall to the modem to be interupted may times.
If you are using a cable modem with LEDs to display the
status, and the cable LED isn't lit, then this is a
likely culprit. If this is your problem, you'll likely
need to call your cable company and have them install a
new cable outlet specifically for your broadband
connection.

I don't have any third party firewalls running.

Any other suggestions? Your help is greatly appreciated.

This one is a mystery. Some folks report that it resolves itself without
effort on their part, over time.

It can definitely be caused by IE or OE being set to "work offline."

My impression is that this is one of those connectivity error messages which
has only two values "can connect" or "can't connect" So any issue in the
path to the resource, may break it.

Ahh--here's a thought I need to remember more often: The update resource
may well be housed in domain spynet.com.

There are still several third-party distributed hosts files available on the
Internet which list "spynet.com" as "bad"--i.e. they block access to
spynet.com.

I spent some time one evening writing to the folks who distribute these
lists that I was able to spot via Google, but without any result that I
noticed, anyway.

So--check your hosts file, or, if your Internet connection might involve any
entity that would do such blocking upstream of you, check with them--I
wouldn't expect this of an ISP, but possibly some corporate IT staff might
have such a list in place on a proxy.
