Try turning off your anti-virus software and close down all programs

Locate the WindowsUpdate.log file under \Windows or \Winnt. Open it and
scroll to the bottom. Look at the error codes and compare them against this
site:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

An illegal copy would come back with an invalid product key message. This
sounds more like a conflict, the error codes in the update log should help.
