My AVG 6.0 (free edition) won't install the new update file dated 9/8/03
when I use the update manager in the AVG Control Center. It says my AVG is
up-to-date. My current database file says 9/1/03. I also was unable to
install it manually by downloading the file from their site.
Any help would be appreciated.

Same here. It's not the first time I've noticed this. I suspect it's a
quirk with the program. This update also required a re-start. Might be
related.

I have the AVG 6.0 free edition too, and just updated the db about 30
minutes ago from the AVG Center it installed on my Desktop, which I do every
day...and I have not had any problems with downloading the update. It does
say to restart my computer, so I do. Maybe things are a bit different with
the way they are doingt things now with all the new stuff 'n such. But, as
long as it works, and it does, I don't question how it wants to do it's job.
:-))

Best regards,
Jan :)

I've been having problems like this since I did a WinXP SP1 update.
I can download all the database updates with no problems but every
program update advises me that 'download has completed, restart the
computer'. But, restarting the PC does not complete the install and
the next PC restart reminds me that a restart is required -
frustrating, yes.
So each program update means reloading the entire AVG from scratch.
Tiresome. But, I still think it has something to do with that WinXP
SP1 update.

'Sorry, should have said, that my SP1 upgrade was not without its own
difficulties. :-(

Hi All,

Similar problems here. I use the free version of AVG6 as a "backup"
utility on a XP (SP1) PC. I've experienced problems with udates since
1 September. With hindsight, this was just after I downloaded several
critical updates from Microsoft.

When I tried to update AVG6, via the control centre, after the 8
September release, I could not connect to the server. I downloaded the
update from the website but the virus database still showed a 1
September date. I assumed the application had corrupted. I unistalled
it and set it up from scratch. I had no problem in updating from the
control centre but the date still read 1 September.

I've just tried to download the 11 September release. I cannot connect
to the server from the control centre. I downloaded the file from the
website but it will not update. The database still reads 1 September.

I've used the free AVG6 for over a year without a problem- until now.
I'm looking around for alternative and alternative free AV
application.

When I first clicked the button nothing happened.
I waited and waited, and just as I was about to
cancel it, thinking I couldn't connect to the server,
the d/l started coming in... *very* slowly.

Recently had the same trouble. AVG has always been bullet-proof and dead
reliable until recently. I'm now having trouble getting updates with both
XP and 98se.

More often than not, it times out before it connects to the server and when
it does connect, it very slow to download.

Curiously, before I started this message, I shut down AVG, re-started it,
and then tried an update. Success!

No idea if it was coincidental or not. Might be worth trying if others are
still having trouble.

It's re-assuring to know that I am not alone! ;-)
The thing I find curious is that if I uninstall AVG and download it
afresh, I still have the problem about the program updates downloading
OK but not installing properly. I reckon my SP1 problems screwed up
Registry and my problem lies there.
Or maybe I am short of a cookie. :-) Who knows.

I've just reinstalled AVG6 for the second time. I don't think did
anything differently from when I first tried a reinstall but, at last,
I have the latest 11/9/02 AV definitions. Whether I'll be able to
install the next release remains to be seen.... Alpha

Not sure if this is related or not, but, I tried a few minutes ago to update
using the AVG Control, and after a few seconds, I got an error box that said
the following;

"An automatic connection to the Internet could not be established. Please
manually establish a connection to download your Update files (this can
typically be done by launching your Internet browser)"

This is the first time I have ever seen this message. Until today, I have
been able to update my AVG files using the Control with no problem. I also
tried Alpha's suggestion of shutting down AVG first, but, I am still getting
this message. Then I went to the website to see if it would open and it did.
Thus, it would appear there is some sort of problem with the Control end of
things.
It seems that last update was Sept. 11, 2003, which is the date of my last
update.

I have Windows ME, AVG v6.0.518 Free Edition.

I get that message occasionally.
Sometimes its associated with making a new internet connection.
And sometimes because I am not connected!!!
So I connect (!) and use the AVG menu - Service / Update and things
work normally from there.

Ah..since I have cable connection, I did not think about not actually being
'connected'.

Thank you for the additional info, I really appreciate it.

Best regards,
Jan :)
