HELP.... I think AVG causes more problems than note. AND I also cant find a re-store date........ Never had that problem befoe either. I did have the back door trogan, but all 3 cleaned it .. just AVG keeps saying its back....
thanks

Personal/Professional Opinion - your mileage may vary - backup what
data you want to keep, then format/reinstall XP and applications.

Friendly suggestion: Spend some time getting familiar with how to avoid
infections. Anti-virus protection is great and firewalls are good tools.
Toss in some safe computing practices (such as obtaining security updates
and not opening attachments without scanning them individually) and the
chances of the system staying clean greatly increase. It takes some time to
learn these things but in the long run, it will take less time than what
will be spent on restoring the system over and over again.

Your error message is in originating from a problem with the AVG antivirus
program. If it has been damaged, it needs to be repaired. The damage and
failure to uninstall/reinstall and the failure of System Restore may all be
due to lingering damage or the continuing presence of a virus infection.

Look up the trojans and viruses that have been detected at the websites of
the antivirus vendors. There are often additional manual steps to achieve a
full cleanup. If not confident that the a/v cleanup and the manual cleanup
have fully removed the damage or virus files, fully restoring back to
factory condition (ground zero) is an option worth considering.

Adware/spyware intrusions are very aggressive these days. Should toss those
onto the "learning pile" as well.

there are 2 parts to AVG. terminating the one that is in the TRAY will not allow it to be uninstalled.
bring up the task manager and terminate the second part of avg, then it might allow itself to be uninstalled.

avgserv.exe is the name of the second part.

Hear, hear!!!
Sharon, I fully second those thoughts.
Boy, those NGs would lose a considerable amount of 'self-inflicted' problem
postings.

Hi, Sue.

If you must reinstall WinXP, perhaps you can install ONLY WinXP, leaving
your installed applications and data intact. For instructions, see this
Microsoft KB article:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

IMMEDIATELY after reinstalling, get your firewall and antivirus working
again, THEN go online to Windows Update and get all the fixes. Even with
broadband, this will take an hour or two, in addition to the re-install
itself, so better set aside half a day!

(I've never run AVG - or any AV except Norton - so I can't comment on that.)
