Can't turn off with keyboard / Is blackjack slower in Vista

I can't figure out how to turn the computer off using only the key
board. In previous windows, it was Windows/U/S , or maybe
Windows/U/U.

With Vista, I seem to have to use the mouse, or the infernal laptop
touch pad, to get to, then click on, an arrow which displays a list,
which requires the use of the touch pad again, because the list has no
accelerator keys. 4 steps, each more complicated than one letter,
where one keyboard letter used to do.

Also, I don't have them side by side, but it seems that when playing
Solitaire, it took longer to turn over each set of 3 cards, than it
did for me on WinXP or Win98, and I'm sure the Vista CPU is faster
than the others I've used. (It's a Toshiba Satellite laptop, which
came with Vista installed, but I don't know the speed.

Press the Windows key, then the right arrow three times, to see a pop-up
menu; scroll up if you want something other than shutdown, and press enter.
Or press the magic letter in the pop-up.

Press ALT+F4 then arrow up or down, hit enter. Same as all the rest of the
Win versions.

Thanks a lot.

I'll have to wait until I'm at my brother's again to learn about the
magic letter. :) The pop-up list shutdown/restart/hibernate etc.
didn't have any letters in bold or underlined. But maybe they still
work as if they were. I'll try next time.

I've never used alt+F4 to shut down. Using it now, in win98, it shut
down Firefox without shutting down windows. In Solitaire, it shut
down Solitaire without shutting down Windows. I don't think it's what
I want, or at least it's not the same as the rest of win versions, but
thanks anyhow.

I just tried Art Storm's idea (after making sure no applications were in
the foreground), and I agree, its selection box has no underlined keys. The
pop-up menu by my method, which, by the way, requires less care to start,
has the underlining, whether I get there by keyboard or mouse.

I rarely use the Alt-F4 method, and basically had forgotten that it exists
:-)

Isn't that strange!

In win98, it shows when you right click on a task in the task bar at
the bottom, but I never use it.

BTW, I have winXP but it's not working now.

P&M because this list moves so fast.

An useful thing to remember is that Alt-F4 will exit from the program that
has the focus, so to shut down that way you need to click somewhere to make
sure no program has the focus - or just exit from whatever, until you get
to shutdown (since you're shutting down anyway).

The flip side is that if you want only to exit from the program that has
the focus, you can use Alt-F4.
