I have opted to turn off Real-time protection. Despite
that, the icon remains in th esystem tray and appears
active.

I also see a process running: gcasDtServ.exe When I
terminate that process, the icon also exits.

I just don't want the program running in background. Is it
possible to stop it without un-installing it?

Anyone?

Yes--but you'll need to use the instructions in the "workaround" paragraph
of this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892375 End users may be prompted to allow or
block administrative actions that originate from a central management tool
after they install Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) on a computer that is managed
by Systems Management Server 2003
