I am trying to take Read-only off of a folder and all sub files and folders
in the Properties area I deselect Read-only (I don't even know why it was set
to that to begin with) and click Apply then select Apply changes to this
folder, subfolders and files and click ok. It goes through the process of
making those changes and I click to close properties, but when I go back into
properties the #$% folder is marked as Read-only again I could do this a
million times and get the same results. UAC was turned off when the program
was installed and is still turned off. I can't edit the permissions to give
CREATOR OWNER full controll either, I click apply and it goes through the
procedures and then Full control is unselected again, I have no idea what to
do to get these changes to stick, PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME?

Thank you.

The read only attribute on a folder doesn't mean anything. Why are you
trying to change that? It's actually in an indeterminate state. The
folders are open for reading.

Is this because you are trying to access some folders but getting an access
denied message?

Because I need to edit some of the files inside that folder and for some
reason it's not letting me save the changes to the file after I edit it.

The problem doesn't have anything to do with what appears to be the read
only setting on the folder as seen on the Properties sheet. It's actually
in an indeterminate state. The same was the case in XP.

What is the folder? Are these user files? Have you checked the permissions
on that file? From Start | Help and Support search on permissions and look
at the "What are permissions link".

No, I can access the folders and files even add more folders and files to
it, but I can't edit a file that was in the folder to begin with. I tried
moving the folder to a new location to edit it then move it back to the
original folder, but it still won't let me save the changes.

But did you look at the permissions on that file?

It is the Microsoft Train Simulator folder. All permissions are set to Full
except for CREATOR OWNER that one doesn't have any permissions cause it won't
let me chane the permissions to Allow it any controll. But I can change all
the other permissions.

Since this is an MS game you might want to post to the
microsoft.public.windows.vista.games newsgroup. Sorry I don't have any
other suggestions.

yes, it is set so everthing except owner creator has full permission.
That is a strange permission setting. Did you attempt to give owner creator
full pemission?

Not a game but a training simulator, for MS exams.....right?

I can't say for sure, I'm not the OP. I've never used it but Google shows
it as a game.

Doesn't it depend on what is showing in the Read-Only check-box?

If there is a tick in the check-box then the directory _is_ read-only.
If it's a solid square, there _could be_ read-only files within. If it's
blank then _nothing_ is read-only.

That's the way I came to understand a document back when XP started
using this method.

after reading all this thread.
it seems the system may be protecting this file for some reason.
it does happen.

you might boot into safe mode and then try to change the permissions on the file/folder from there.

No, the read only attribute on a folder does not affect whether the files
contained therein are readable. See this article about this for XP.

You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549/en-us

It states, in part,

"Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a
folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories,
and other programs...Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows
Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder..."

Hi Mikey

I have EXACTLY the same problem getting my vista pc permissions for
Creator/Owner to be set permanently to full control so that at least every
visible account name showing up on the security tab in properties, (whether
for the entire external drive or for the folders on it or just for the files
in the folders) can then have full control. This would then hopefully solve
my problem, and if not then I could look elsewhere for a solution rather than
going round in circles or making the problem worse.

Also when looking at the various windows and tabs it seems that there is
something called 'special permission'. Do you know what this refers to? I
find on my pc that 'creator/owner' has this type of permission but cannot get
full control. I don't know what special permission allows 'creator/owner' to
actually do with a folder or file (if anything at all).

As I am the owner of the pc, and therefore the creator of all 'personal
files and folders' and can delete and create and change them at will, and am
always logged on as administrator - password protected - (the only user
account on my pc, apart from Guest which is always off), then I should be
able to import the files I created and exported myself, but I can't because
of these bloody 'permissions' denying me access to my own files.

I have already tried booting in safe mode and accessing the security tab in
properties for the external drives, the folders and the files but the problem
still exists. As all the other relevant visible account names apart from
'creator/owner' that show up in the security tab have full control and the
window that shows my username account entry as 'Administrator/username'
being the same as the owner shown on the 'owner tab' which has full control
on all other windows, I don't understand why 'creator/owner' should have a
different perssion setting of 'special', nor why it is impossible to change
THAT account entry permanently to full control. I also don't understand why
those that do have full control: SYSTEM, Administrator,
Username/Administrator, etc have permission for everything BUT 'special',
whatever that is. I would have thought that the account name showing on the
'owner tab' would or should be the same as creator/owner and vice versa.
