Can't surf after a few pages

Win 98, Celeron 533 chip, 128 memory,IE6.
Once I have accessed 8 or 10 sites/pages IE stops wiorking
properly. The world still turns and the blue bar (?) at
the bottom still moves but it is if it is heading for an
error 404 page. I can let it go on for 10 minutes but
there is no further action. Nothing appears at all.
I had a date problem with my .cab files but that is
supposedly fixed.
What next?

first - empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files) or better yet a full
disk cleanup
This is found in Accessories|System Tools

next - check to see if Hard Drive is nearing FULL
Rightclick drive C: in My Computer or Windows Explorer and choose Properties

next - do a scandisk followed by a defrag

next - post back and let us know

Thanks for trying but all those have been done in the 24
hours preceding my question. I try to keep the thing neat.
Not quite clean but neat. Somehow, on 7/27/04 some of my
files, including 4 .cab files, were re-dated to the year
2023. As of last night(8/9/04) I changed all of them back
to the present date. The problem started before I got them
all changed back. Which leads to the question, did I
change a file somehow that controls how long I can spend
connected to the net or how many sites/pages I can visit?
Seems to me to be similar to how high is the sky. Answer,
who knows! Excuse me while I drown in a sea of my own
ineptitude.

Scandisk will easily fix any improper dates. I don't have Windows 98 in
front of me but, its in the options somewhere. This would have no effect on
the browser, however.

Have you run spyware programs?

I suggest you download a little program called Hijackthis. Go to this page
for instructions on its use and to download.

This will scan your computer and generate a log of everything that is
running. If you wish, set up an account at Spywareinfo
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?act=idx and post your LOG there, not
here. There are many experts on that forum and someone will analyze it and
let you know if anything is amuck and what you can do to fix it.

You always want to keep your virus definitions up-to-date as well as use
tools like Spybot and Ad-Aware which also must be kept up-to-date every time
*before* you use them to scan your machine.

Spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

If you need a good FREE antivirus try AVG at http://www.grisoft.com/
