When trying to startup system hangs. Load the recovery cd
and found out that the 'C'dives directory is damaged. I
need a way to repair the directory so that I can get to my
data, etc. Please help - (e-mail address removed)

If you had an actual XP CD as opposed to a recovery CD, you could try a
repair install. That said, even if you had the CD, assuming your drive is
formatted NTFS as opposed to FAT32, there's no way to access the data from
outside XP and the message you are getting will even keep you out of the
hidden machine administrator account.

I can only suggest a file recovery service, many are listed in the
classifieds in the back of many computer magazines or you might try doing a
search at www.google.com on the phrase file recovery, you may find a utility
that can help.

For future reference and to avoid this type of circumstance in the future,
pay close attention to the third line in my signature, I can't stress that
enough.
