I'm not sure if the problem I'm having is a hardware
problem or if it's related to Windows 2000 Pro. My
computer has a 40G Maxtor harddrive and 2Ghz processor.

The last time I was able to start my computer, I was taken
to the set-up screen where I was asked to confirm the
speed of my hard drive, which is 2Ghz. I did this and
was able to start the computer. The next time I went to
start it, I wasn't able to. I also remember seeing
something that said my computer had "hung" the last time
it was started. What would cause this to happen?

I phoned the Service Department where I purchased the
computer from and the fellow I spoke with informed me that
I would probably have to reinstall Windows 2000. I've
tried using the Emergency Boot disks and the Windows 2000
disk and nothing is happening.

I would appreciate any help I can get with this problem.

If you post the details of what happens when you turn on your pc (error
messages, etc.), then someone may be able to help you.

I am not getting any error messages at all, only a blue
screen. I thought maybe it was my monitor and tried a
different one, with the same results.

Check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at the Reg_Sz
string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Else these may help you.

If I understand you, your not getting past the bios screen?? If your
Emergency Boot disks don't work, then I would assume that. First thing I
would do is pop the case, and check all connections, cards, ram, make sure
everything is in tight.

Find yourself a dos boot disk to try for now. Your more interested in the
machine running then windows 2k at this point.

If that don't work, remove all cards but your video card. If that don't work
and you have more then one stick of ram, you could try using one and try
booting, then switch the other(s).

Then try unhooking your cd-roms, then the hard drive. Get your machine down
to minimum hardware. The thought is to eliminate any other cause hopefully
will lead you to the reason.

If you can get the bios to boot and start off of a boot disk, start hooking
things up and hopefully you will find what is wrong.

good luck.
