All of a sudden, I launch internet explorer and i get the
encountered error message. I went to microsoft.com and
they say that I need to uninstall some software - but I
don't have that software, also the dlls that they list is
not the dll that I receive in the error for msac.dll. I
searched for that file on my pc, but it isnt there. So, I
reinstalled windows (XP) still nothing?

I'm having the same problem, except with Windows 2000. It was working fine one day then it quite. Then I upgraded to 6.0 to see if that would clear up the problem.

I get the following error Event Type:

Error
Event Source: Microsoft Internet Explorer
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Microsoft Internet Explorer ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: iexplore.exe, 6.0.2800.1106, winshow.dll, 1.0.0.1, 00009901.

Any suggestions?

Kathy,
From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced uncheck "Enable third party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to open.

Run CWShredder from http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html It's been
the most helpful with this problem. It may be the only cleanup program you
need this time. CWShredder is only about 125 KB so it could be downloaded
from another machine onto a floppy disk.

Search for and remove other malware and note the security tips at:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
