Hello

I'm having trouble starting Help and Support on my XP Pro
machine. I have been to many web sites regarding this,
and all seem to think that it is probably cause by
installing a reg/histroy cleaner. Which I did and have
since uninstalled.

When I go into the services manager, Help and support
isn't started, but is set to automatically. When I try
and start it comes up with Error 126: Specified module
can not be found.

I have tried an number of registy patchs of the web,
which haven't worked so far. I've also tried reinstalling
the pchealth.inf file from the XP cd, which seems to work
fine until it asks for the SP1 CD, which I don't have as
it was installed straight of the web using windows update.

Not sure what to do next, any help would be great

Thanks

Hey Greg,

All the service pack 1 files should be in \windows\servicepackfiles\i386

Try giving that as the locations when it asks for the sp1 cd.

ok so I tried installing the pchealth.inf file again, SP1
came, couldn't find a directory called
\windows\servicepackfiles\i386, but clicked on
\windows\i386 and it seemed to find the files. Got all
the way through to the last file couldn't find (think it
was pchdt_w3.cab) searched for it, found it in dir
windows/Last Good/pchealth/ etc etc, used it. All seemed
to go well. Rebooted machine, still no go. Same error
when I try to start it from services Error 126: The
sepecified module could not be found.

Next???

Hey Greg,

Its rather odd that you don;t have that folder, because it gets installed
when you install the service pack, its where xp would go for any windows xp
component addons you may install, and where windows file protection looks
first to try and recover files, that's probably why its asks for the cd,
because it cant find it on disk.

Its path should be stored in the registry

Run regedit and look for the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

There should be a value ServicePackSourcePath

Which should be pointing to the \windows\ServicePackFiles
folder

If you want confirmation about the servicepackfiles folder, I dug out this
link from my favourites

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329260

Something odd appears to have happened to your systsem if you dont have this
folder, I'm not sure what the \windows\i386 folder is, I've looked at 3 xp
systems and none of them have it, perhaps your file system is corrupted. Try
running a chkdsk before you do anything else

You could try a repair install and reapply sp1 and any other patches. You'll
need the windows xp retail cd.

Boot from the cd as if you are installing from scratch.
Take defaults to all answers until the one after hit F8 to confirm the
license agreement, at which point setup scans for existing windows
installations, when it finds one, select it, and it will give you the option
to repair it, you'll need the product key.

Failing that, its a backup of what you want to keep and a total reinstall.
