It appears that on Win2K and WinXP I can no longer start an app from a DOS
prompt in a folder that has whitespaces in the name, e.g., "Program Files".
Does anyone know of a way around this? Using the Windows GUI
("Start"/"Run"/...) isn't an option for me in this particular case.

Thanks

you could try using the shortname (8.3 format) of the file or folder
i will no doubt be corrected here but its normally its the first six
characters (ignoring spaces) then tilde (~) then a number the number depends
on how many files start with the same six characters.
program files is progra~1, my documents is mydocu~1

hope that helps,
Martin

Place quotes around any path with spaces. Example:
Change
C:\Program Files\some program
lo
"C:\Program Files\some program"

Maybe :) As far as this question goes, I'm lazy and find it easier to type
quote marks than to wrap my head around 8.3 names. ;)

David,
I don't know your email address!
First? I didn't realise it was a race.

If i have set this up incorrectly so that it causes you, or others, offence
or problems then please tell me what it is so that i can fix it.

I beg your pardon.
A simple . is an easy way to fill a gap, I will probably upset somebody else
but as you can see I have used a different character.

please let me know if there are any other characters you "own" and i will
try to avoid using them :)

Regards,
Martin
