I was running windows update which hung while installing
sp4 for Windows 2000. Now the machine can't boot past
the Win2k splash screen (blue screens and restarts).
I've tried using a bootalbe floppy, but can't get to my
d: drive where the win2k installation disk is. Safe Mode
also fails...How can I get this machine back up? Thanks,

_Marc

You can start Recovery Console and from a command prompt change to the
%SystemRoot%$NtServicePackuninstall$\spuninst
directory. Then issue the command
batch SPuninst.bat

The next step is to start in 'Safe Mode' and uninstall the SP again from
Control Panel|Add/Remove to finish the uninstall.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks.
Press ENTER at the "Setup Notification" screen. Press R to repair a Windows
2000 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Once the password has been
validated, you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access
to the hard disk. You can only access the following folders on your
computer: %systemroot% and %windir%

Thanks for the explaination, Dave. Unfortunately, this
is the only 2000 machine we have and we don't have any
set up disks or cds (I'm installing off of an MSDN dvd
which doesn't seem to be bootable). Right now the only
thing that works is A:\> when I boot off a DOS disk
(won't recognize C:). I'm going to take a look online to
see if I can find a downloadable version of the setup CDs.

Please let me know if you have any other ideas. Thanks,

~Marc

The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts. Or download
the ISO image from the msdn site and burn the image. This would be a
bootable CD-Rom.
