Vista is doing me head in....Ever since installing Vista on a new HDD for me laptop Iam unable to shut me laptop down via the start button.....Have to do a hard shut down which I don't really like doing...Any ideas...

Does vista start to shut down and close programs? Or does it just hang? Are you using the latest drivers for Vista?

Regards

I goto Start then to the lil red icon thingy to shut down...When I click on that I just get a black screen insted of the usual options to shut down/ hibernate or what ever....Laptop is still running though as I can hear the fans etc and idiot lites on lappy are still flashing...

Are you closing Vista down this way?

Sorry to say, but your way puts the PC to sleep, unless you change it. Thank you MS. ;)

What happens if you just press the actual power button for a second ...

What happens if you press Alt + F4 with no open programs ... also this will close the active window/programs, keep using Alt + F4 and windows will shut down.

There are several more ways to shutdown Vista including wizkid's way ... the above should do also. :D

;)

If I hit Alt F4 it just closes all open programs..If I hold power button down the latop shuts down, but when I go to restart it gives me the options to start in Safe mode etc...
I am not really that fussed about not shutting it down as this is me Crunching machine and i'd prefer it running 24/7...Supose i'm just not used to Vista
